A week just isn't long enough, there is much to see and do,
many beautiful and interesting places to visit; see below for some ideas.
'Sliabh Amharc' is the perfect base to explore the magnificent walks in the area. With rolling hills, high mountains, Mediterranean vineyards and limestone plateaux cut by deep gorges.
Walks can include:
Gorge de Galamus and the Ermitage St. Antoine
Walk through scented hills to Peyrepertuse Cathar Castle on the GR36 route & visit to village of Duillhac
Walk from the Linas up the Pic de Bugarach. The highest mountain in the Corbieres, (viewed from the house).
Queribus Cathar stronghold with views across Maury vineyards to the Pyrenees. Also visit the beautiful village of Cucugnan with its windmill.
Roman Aqueduct set in the vineyards of the Fenouilledes.
Forest walks in the limestone hills and the valley of the river Agly
A heretical sect once known as Albigensians, now called Cathari, occupied a large area of the Languedoc during the late 12th and early 13th century. The Cathars took refuge in castles and fortified towns when Pope Innocent 111 instigated a full scale crusade to wipe them out after failing to convert them to Catholicism.
The photograph is the castle of Peyrepertuse, a short distance from Cubieres.
Other castles include:
Queribus, just outside Cucugnan village.
Puilauren, on the road to St Paul de Fenouillet, towards Axat.
Arques (Chateau),near Rennes Le Bain.
Carcassonne, the Chateau Comtal within the city of Carcassonne.
Most things you may need to buy during your stay can be found in St. Paul de Fenouillet, about a 10 minuite drive from the Gîte. A lovely drive throught the gorge!
Soulatgé has a Wednesday evening market
Perpignan has excellent shops
There are numerous places to swim not too far away from Cubieres with places to park, but in hot weather they can be very popular so it's good to get there early!
There are two pools near the Gorge du Galamus
A pool at Duilhac sous Peyrepertuse which has a 4E charge for parking
A gorge near Tautaval; a created pool near Maury towards Chateau Queribus
Rennes les Bains has a warm spa swimming pool.
Via Ferratta is an activity well suited to this mountainous area. It is rock climbing for the more safety conscious as iron bars are securely embeded in the rock face enabling you to climb without the worry of looking for the next foothold. It is an activity that is suitable for anyone over the age of nine with climbs of two to four hour duration.
